Mini Talk by Sawangwongse Yawnghwe
【 Yawnghwe Office in Exile: Radical as Reality and a Position without Identity 】
8 December 2016, 5 – 7 pm
At Asian Culture Station, Chiang Mai
Asian Culture Station is pleased to invite you a talk by Sawangwongse Yawnghwe, a Shan artist who spent his early life in Chiang Mai until 13 year old. He is the grandson of Sao Shwe Thaik, the first elected president of the Union of Burma and the last monarch of Yawnghwe. His family was forced to escape to Thailand after the military intervention in 1962, during which his grandfather and uncle were killed. Sawangwongse’s father (Sao Hso Lern Fa aka Chao Tzang Yawnghwe (1939-2004)) was part of the Shan State Army, which was founded by his grandmother (Mahadevi Sao Nang Hearn Hkam) in the jungle near the border with Thailand to resist the Myanmar’s military government in Shan State. State violence against minorities in Myanmar, which was behind the family’s struggle and forced exile, continues even today, when the Burmese state is denying citizenship to the Rohingya muslim community. Sawangwongse recently visited Myanmar in November 2016, the first time after he left at one year old.
The talk is about his art practice, which brings personal memory and reflects history of the past to the current political events in Myanmar. He often creates work by drawing and painting technic, presenting texts and human activities. While he lives completely outside of Myanmar, what expression one reacts through the art form in the place and context where is not belong to the original occurrence?【 Yawnghwe Office in Exile: Radical as Reality and a Position without Identity 】 might have an answer or simply create more question for all of us to find out.
