Asian Culture Station และ The James H.W. Thompson Foundation ขอเชิญทุกท่านเข้าร่วมการฟังการบรรยายโดยดร. คำวอน บุนยะพอน นักวิจัยและผู้อำนวยการแห่ง The Buddhist Archives of Photography เป็นโครงการสำรวจภาพถ่ายมหาศาลของศาสนาพุทธนิกายเถรวาทจากวัดทั่วหลวงพระบาง
 
“หลวงพระบาง” เมืองที่องค์การยูเนสโกได้รับรองให้เป็นมรดกโลกได้เป็นศูนย์กลางของพุทธศาสนาและวัฒนธรรมของลาวมาตั้งแต่กลางศตวรรษที่สิบสี่ ที่ซึ่งพุทธนิกายเถรวาทเองก็ได้เจริญรุ่งเรืองนับแต่นั้นมาเช่นกัน
 
The Buddhist Archive of Photography ตั้งอยู่ ณ ศาลาธรรมวิหาร วัดสุวรรณคีรี หลวงพระบาง เป็นสถานที่เพียงแห่งเดียวในลาวที่ได้เก็บรวบรวมภาพถ่ายและฟิล์มกว่า 35,000 ชิ้น จากวัดและผู้คนในหลวงพระบาง โดยเป็นภาพที่ถูกถ่ายตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2420 จนถึงปัจจุบัน ส่วนใหญ่เป็นภาพถ่ายบุคคลและวิถีชีวิตของพระสงฆ์ พิธีกรรมทางศาสนา เหตุการณ์บ้านเมือง การจาริกแสวงบุญ ท่องเที่ยว รวมไปถึงภาพถ่ายส่วนตัวอื่นๆ ฯลฯ ในช่วงศตวรรษที่ผ่านมา
 
สาธุใหญ่คำจัน วีรจิตตะ มหาเถระ หรือพระหลักคำ วีรวิสุทธิคุณ (พ.ศ.2463-2550) เจ้าอาวาสวัดแสนสุขาราม และ Hans Georg Berger นักเขียนและช่างภาพชาวเยอรมันร่วมกันก่อตั้ง The Buddhist Archive ขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2550 ซึ่งได้กลายเป็นคลังภาพถ่ายประวัติศาสตร์ หนังสือ และเอกสารที่บันทึกด้วยลายมือเกี่ยวกับพุทธนิกายเถรวาทที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ตั้งแต่นั้น สถาบันแห่งนี้จึงเต็มไปด้วยวัตถุดิบอันมีคุณประโยชน์ต่อการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับพุทธศาสนา วัฒนธรรมและประวัติศาสตร์ลาว
 
ในการบรรยายครั้งนี้ ดร. คำวอนจะเริ่มด้วยการเล่าถึงโครงการศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ “Quiet in the Land” ในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2547-2551 ซึ่งเป็นโครงการที่ทำให้ Hans Georg Berger ได้เดินทางมาทำงานที่ประเทศลาวและพบกับท่านเจ้าอาวาสสาธุใหญ่คำจัน วีรจิตตะ มหาเถระ จากวัดแสนสุขาราม ท่านทั้งสองใช้เวลา 2-3 ปีในการหาทุนสนับสนุนเพื่อร่วมกันตั้งโครงการนี้ขึ้นมา รวมทั้งได้เริ่มการอบรมคน จัดเตรียมอุปกรณ์ ตั้งแกลเลอรีและวางแผนการเรียนรู้เพื่อการรวบรวมข้อมูลทางประวัติศาสตร์เหล่านี้ และก็จะเล่าถึงหัวข้อวิจัยที่โครงการมุ่งหมายอยู่ตอนนี้ด้วย

ดร. คำวอน บุนยะพอน
ดร. คำวอน บุนยะพอน เคยบวชเป็นสามเณรและพระภิกษุที่วัดแสนสุขาราม หลวงพระบาง เป็นลูกศิษย์ของสาธุใหญ่คำจัน วีรจิตตะ มหาเถระ จบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีจากมหาวิทยาลัยมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ราชวิทยาลัย ในปี พ.ศ. 2544 และระดับปริญญาโทสาขาบริหารจัดการธุรกิจจากมหาวิทยาลัยเกริก ต่อมาเขาได้รับการสนับสนุนจากThe Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) แห่งหอสมุดแห่งชาติอังกฤษ (British Library) ในกรุงลอนดอน ภายใต้บริบทงานวิจัยของเขาระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2550-2554 ซึ่งทำให้เขาได้รับตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการจัดการของสถาบัน The Buddhist Archive of Photography ในเมืองหลวงพระบาง ในปีพ.ศ. 2554-2559 เขาศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาเอกเกี่ยวกับพุทธศาสนาของลาว ณ มหาวิทยาลัยฮัมบวร์ค(The University of Hamburg) ประเทศเยอรมนี ในฐานะส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการ “The Lao Sangha and Modernity” และจบการศึกษาในปี พ.ศ. 2559 ด้วยวิทยานิพนธ์ในหัวข้อ “ชีวิต การทำงาน และบทบาททางสังคมของสาธุใหญ่คำจัน วีรจิตตะ มหาเถระ พ.ศ. 2463-2550” (The Life, Work and Social Role of the Most Venerable Sathu Nyai Khamchan Virachitta Maha Thela 1920-2007) ปัจจุบันดร. คำวอนดำรงตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการแห่ง The Buddhist Archives ที่เมืองหลวงพระบาง

Asian Culture Station and The James H.W. Thompson Foundation is pleased to invite you to a talk by Khamvone Boulyaphonh, a researcher and director of the Buddhist Archives of Photography. The Buddhist Archive of Photography is a discovery of a large and varied body of Theravada Buddhist photographs in the monasteries in Luang Prabang.
 
The UNESCO world heritage site of Luang Prabang has been the centre of Lao Buddhism and culture since the mid-fourteenth century. Theravada Buddhism has flourished in this ancient city since then.
 
The Buddhist Archive of Photography is only one kind of this archive in Laos, located at Sala Thammavihan in Vat Suvannakhili, Luang Prabang. A large corpus of more than 35,000 photographs (prints and negatives) found in the monasteries and private collections in Luang Prabang date from AD 1880s up to our own days. The most photographs appear monk portraits, monastic life and rituals, political and social events, pilgrimages, travels, personalities, and etc., were taken during the last century.
 
Since its foundation in 2007 by a charismatic monk, the Most Venerable Sathu Nyai Khamchan Virachitta Maha Thela (1920–2007), abbot of Vat Saen Sukharam and the German writer and photographer Hans Georg Berger, the Buddhist Archive houses one of the largest collections of historical photographs, printed books and handwritten documents related to Theravada Buddhism in Southeast Asia. Therefore, this institution provides useful tools for the study of Lao Buddhism, culture and history.
 
The talk will start with a visit of Hans Georg Berger, a German photographer, in Luang Prabang through an international contemporary art project called “Quiet in the Land” in 2004 to 2008. With his chance to work in Laos and meet an abbot of Vat Saen Sukharam, they took some years to find a support and founded the project including training people, setting up equipment and gallery and learning strategy to collecting the archive. In addition, he will share the subject of the research, which the project currently focuses on.

About speakers
Khamvone Boulyaphonh, Ph.D.
Ordained as a novice and later a monk and a disciple of the Most Venerable Phra Khamchan Virachitta Maha Thera at Vat Saen Sukharam, Luang Prabang, Dr. Khamvone Boulyaphonh graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Bangkok, Thailand in 2001, and received my Master of Arts in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Krirk University, Bangkok. Within the context of research projects from 2007 to 2011 funded by the Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) of the British Library in London, he became Managing Director of the Buddhist Archive of Photography in Luang Prabang. From 2011 to 2016, he has been pursuing doctorate in Lao Buddhism at the University of Hamburg, Germany as part of the project “The Lao Sangha and Modernity”. His PhD completed in 2016 on the subject of “The life, work and social role of the Most Venerable Sathu Nyai Khamchan Virachitta Maha Thela 1920-2007”. Currently, he has been appointed as director of the Buddhist Archives of Photography in Luang Prabang.

Asian Culture Station (ACS) is a gathering depot for citizens to build a sustainable relationship and to enrich mutual understanding between Thailand and other Asian nations including Japan. Focusing on arts and culture in particular, ACS provides a co-working space for collaboration, on & off site events for people’s appreciation of artistic endeavors, and information through sets of publications and first-hand materials for further study on the region. ACS is co-operated by the Japan Foundation Asia Center, Japan’s principal organization for cultural exchange, and Chiang Mai Art Conversation, an energetic artist collective whose office is also newly established within the station. Co-organized with the Japan Foundation Asia Center, ACS in Chiang Mai is one of the three venues in Southeast Asia. The other two stations are in Yangon, Myanmar and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
