Asian Culture Station มีความยินดีที่จะเชิญท่านร่วมรับฟังการบรรยาย และรับชมการฉายภาพยนตร์โดยศิลปินและผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์ คุณทาคุโร โคตะกะ บางท่านอาจจำผลงานและภาพยนตร์ของเขาได้ จากที่เขาเคยแสดงผลงานที่เชียงใหม่ไปแล้วเมื่อปี 2015 ผ่านนิทรรศการของแจแปนฟาวเดชั่น ชื่อ “Shuffling Spaces”.
แต่เมื่อเร็วๆนี้เขาได้รับทุนสำหรับวิจัยและสร้างผลงานชิ้นใหม่ ในเชียงใหม่ โดยได้รับการสนับสนุนโดย Agency for Cultural Affairs ซึ่งเป็นทุนของรัฐบาลญี่ปุ่น ในระยะเวลาทุนหนึ่งปีนี้ เขามีแผนจะวิจัยเรื่องการรวมกลุ่มของศิลปินในเอเชีย ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น เขาอยากใช้โอกาสที่เฉพาะอันนี้ ผลิตภาพยนตร์ไซไฟ แต่ใช้เทคนิคแบบสารคดีในการถ่ายทำส่วนใหญ่ที่เชียงใหม่ และบางส่วนของจังหวัดปัตตานี และ กรุงเทพฯ สามสถานที่นี้จะเปิดเผยความรู้สึกที่แตกต่างของฉากทิวทัศน์ และการเมืองท้องถิ่นในภาคเหนือ กลางและใต้ของประเทศไทย
ในโอกาสของการจัดการบรรยายและการฉายภาพยนตร์ครั้งนี้ จะเริ่มด้วยการฉายภาพยนตร์เรื่อง “The Village’s Bid for UFO” ซึ่งเป็นภาพยนตร์ที่ถูกคัดเลือกให้เป็นภาพยนตร์เปิดของเทศกาลภาพยนตร์สารคดีนานาชาติอินโดนีเซีย “Festival Film Dokumenter Yogyakarta 2017” หลังจากนั้นเขาจะเล่ารายละเอียดของโครงการปัจจุบัน ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในประเทศไทย ท้ายที่สุด เขาจะให้มุมมองอื่นของเขาด้วยการ แนะนำเพื่อนศิลปินชาวญี่ปุ่นผู้ซึ่งมีการทำงานศิลปะที่โดนใจเขา

เกี่ยวกับผู้บรรยาย
ทาคุโระ โคทากะ
ศิลปิน, เกิดปี พ.ศ. 2527 ที่เมืองไซตามะ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น เขาเคยไปอยู่ในหลายประเทศ จากแอฟริกา มายังเอเชีย ไปจรดตะวันออกกลาง เพื่อสร้างงานที่มีใจความเกี่ยวกับข่าวลือ และสัญลักษณ์ที่ถูกทำให้ลืมจนบาดลึกลงไปเป็นแผลในสังคมหรือเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ในเงามืด
เขาเคยพกมันฝรั่งเดินทางข้ามทวีปแอฟริกาที่มีค่านิยมแตกต่างไปจากญี่ปุ่นอย่างสุดขั้ว และในประเทศที่เต็มไปด้วยข้อจำกัดในการเข้าถึงข้อมูลข่าวสารอย่างพม่า เขาได้ให้ภรรยาของเขาปลอมตัวเป็น โยโกะ โอโนะ ไปปรากฏตัวในเทศกาลศิลปะนานาชาติ ผลงานของเขาหลายชิ้นได้เข้าร่วมเทศกาลภาพยนตร์และนิทรรศการต่างๆ ทั่วโลก
ช่วงไม่กี่ปีมานี้ เขาได้ร่วมทำงานและสานเครือข่ายคนทำงานศิลปะตัดข้ามแนวทางอย่าง “Ongoing Collective” รวมถึงกลุ่มศิลปะ “The National Museum of Art, Okutama” ที่ตั้งฐานที่มั่นอยู่ในโรงเลื่อยไม้กลางป่าเขา
ตัวอย่างเทศกาลที่เขาเคยร่วมแสดงงานด้วยนั้น ได้แก่ “Kaleido Asia” (หอภาพยนตร์, กรุงเทพฯ, 2561), “16th Festival Film Documenter Yogyakarta” (Taman Buddaya, ยกยาการ์ตา, 2560), “56th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen” (Lichtburg Filmpalast, โอเบอร์เฮาเซิน, 2552) และนิทรรศการ “Oku-Noto Triennale: SUZU 2017” (อิชิคาวะ, 2560), “Shuffling Spaces” (Gallery Seescape, เชียงใหม่, 2558), “Koganecho-Bazaar 2014” (โยโกฮามา, 2557), “Jakarta Biennale XIII ARENA” (Indonesian National Gallery, จาการ์ตา, 2552), “KITA!!:Japanese Artists Meet Indonesia” (Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, บันดุง) และระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2560 – 2561 เขามาทำการวิจัยและสร้างสรรค์ผลงานในประเทศไทยโดยได้รับทุนจาก โปรแกรมการเรียนรู้โพ้นทะเลสำหรับศิลปินที่กำลังมาแรง ซึ่งสนับสนุนโดย สำนักงานกิจการวัฒนธรรม ของ รัฐบาลญี่ปุ่น ที่ส่งศิลปินหลายคนออกมาลับฝีมือนอกประเทศกัน

ภาพยนตร์กึ่งสารคดีเรื่องนี้ถูกสร้างโดยมี UFO เป็นภาพแทนของสาธารณูปโภคอย่างโรงไฟฟ้าพลังงานนิวเคลียร์ ซึ่งเมืองซุสุในจังหวัดอิชิคาวะนั้นเคยต้องล้มการประมูลเพื่อสร้างโรงไฟฟ้าพลังงานนิวเคลียร์ไป ชุมชนเมืองจึงแตกออกเป็นสองฝ่าย และเรื่องนี้ก็ได้กลายเป็นประเด็นต้องห้ามที่ไม่สามารถการพูดคุยด้วยกันได้อีก
ทาคุโระ โคทากะ ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ ได้ไปเยือนเมืองซุสุ ในช่วงเทศกาลศิลปะ Oku-Noto Triennale: SUZU 2017 เขาไปเจอกับชายคนหนึ่งทียังยืนกรานต่อต้านโรงไฟฟ้าพลังงานนิวเคลียร์ จึงได้ตัดสินใจสร้างภาพยนตร์ในแนวไซไฟขึ้นมาเล่าถึงชายคนนี้ที่กำลังจะถูกลบเลือนไปจากชุมชนประชากรในเมืองซุสุมาร่วมกันเป็นตัวละครในภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ โดยมีทั้งแม่บ้าน คนต้านนิวเคลียร์ เจ้าหน้าที่เทศบาล นักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติ ฯลฯ บทพูดในภาพยนตร์นี้ก็ไม่มีการเขียนเตรียมเอาไว้ เพียงแต่สัมภาษณ์แล้วให้แต่ละคนแทนประเด็นที่ตนพูดถึงด้วย UFO ไปเลย อย่างแม่บ้านก็พูดถึงดาวตก เจ้าหน้าที่เทศบาลพูดถึงโอลิมปิก ส่วนคนต้านนิวเคลียร์ก็แทนที่พลังงานนิวเคลียร์ด้วย UFO
หนังเรื่องนี้ได้กลายเป็นประเด็นถกกันในหนังสือพิมพ์ญี่ปุ่นบางฉบับ และได้รับการรีวิวโดยนักแสดงสาว โทคิวะ ทาคาโกะ นอกจากนี้ก็ยังได้รับเลือกเป็นภาพยนตร์เปิดเทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติ Festival Film Dokumenter Yogyakarta 2017 ที่อินโดนีเซียด้วย

Asian Culture Station is pleased to invite you to a talk and film screening by a Japanese artist/filmmaker, Mr. Takuro Kotaka.
Some people might remember his works and films that were shown back to the year 2015 in Chiang Mai through a Japan Foundation’s exhibition “Shuffling Spaces”.
Recently, he is granted the fellowship to research & create new works in Chiang Mai, Thailand with support from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japanese Government. During his one year in Chiang Mai, he plans to pursue a research on artist collectives and local politics in Asia. In addition, he takes this unique occasion to create a new science fiction and documentary film, using main locations in Chiang Mai and partly in Pattani and Bangkok. These 3 locations expose a sense of distinctive scenes and local politics in the north, central and south of Thailand.
On occasion of his talk and screening this time, we will start with a screening of a film, The Village’s Bid for UFO (2017). The film was selected as the opening film for the Indonesian international film festival “Festival Film Dokumenter Yogyakarta 2017”. Then, he will explain us in details about his current project in Thailand. Finally, he will give other perspective of himself introductions some of his fellow artists in Japan, whose art practice resonate with him.
The talk will be mainly in English, partly in Japanese and interpreted into Thai. The Q&A session will alternate between the English and Thai languages.

About speakers
Takuro Kotaka
Artist, Born in 1984, Saitama, Japan. He has stayed in many countries throughout Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, creating works based on themes such as rumors and forgotten symbols that cut deep into societal systems and negative history. He crossed the African continent together with a potato, where they have a very different set of values compared to Japan, and in Myanmar, where they have limited access to information, had his wife appear at an international art festival posing as Yoko Ono. His works chosen to participate in several film festival and exhibitions across the world. In recent years, he has participated in the formation a genre-crossing network, working with “Ongoing Collective” and “The National Museum of Art, Okutama”, an art group which operates in an old lumber mill deep in the mountains.

In 2017-2018, He is granted the fellowship to research & create in Thailand by the program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japanese Government, which sends out artist of proven talent abroad.
About the film
The Village’s Bid for UFO

The movie is a fictional documentary that was made by replacing public works like nuclear power plants with UFOs. Formerly, the city of Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture failed in their bid to build a nuclear power plant, and the village was divided in two. Even now, it is still considered a taboo to speak publicly about it.
Director Takuro Kotaka visited Suzu for Oku-Noto Triennale: SUZU 2017 and he met the only man who was still speaking against nuclear power. He decided to produce this film as a sci-fi fiction in order to tell the story about this man who was about to be blotted out. The characters in the film are all people he met in Suzu: the housewives, the anti-nuclear man, the city office staff, the tourists from overseas, and others. The lines in the film were all ad-libs and nothing was scripted. The interviewees were asked to replace different subjects with UFOs; the local housewives replaced shooting stars, the city office staff replaced the Olympics, and the anti-nuclear man replaced nuclear power with UFOs.
This film became a topic of conversation in some Japanese general newspapers, and film reviewed by Japanese Actress, Tokiwa Takako. It was selected as the opening film for the Indonesian international film festival “Festival Film Dokumenter Yogyakarta 2017”.
